We use Canadian Eastern White Birch and Western Yellow Birch. It is a beautiful hardwood with many different grains. It varies in colour from stark white to dark brown. The colour differences can be quite striking and creates a unique visual appeal. Some people love this look while others prefer a piece built with more consistency in colour (usually all white). We are happy to accommodate whichever you prefer.

The Red Cherry that we use is a gorgeous hardwood that has a few different shades of pink and tan and is accented by black mineral streaks and sap pockets. If just sprayed natural then the piece will darken with age becoming a deep red colour with time.

Maple is available in many different grades and depending on the project we will use a few of them. Most of what we use though at Hollywoods is Canadian Eastern white hard maple. It is mostly white with beautiful grains and very few mineral streaks or other colour variations. It is a very dense hardwood and is an excellent choice for kitchen and dining room tables as well as other hard use pieces. Kitchen islands, butcher block islands, counter tops and cutting boards are all good projects to build using Maple because of the naturally occurring bacteria killing oils that it has.

It has become harder in recent years to find consistent colour and quality in the oak available to us on the Canadian market. We have worked very hard with our suppliers to find a grade of oak that we could be proud to build with. We found a grade named Rockfish Red Oak that is far superior to anything else we have seen and we use it exclusively. It is grown in a more northern climate so it's more dense and stable which results in far less weather checking and cracking. The grains are tighter making for a nicer finished product and the colour is also far more consistent. We are proud to say that we use Rockfish Oak on all non visible parts (such as leg blocks). We do not use scrap or lesser grade oak to cut corners.

We use Canadian Pine to build clients rustic looking or distressed furniture. Because it is a softwood it has a tendency to easily dent so it's a good choice if you like furniture to look lived with or rustic. It has many large knots and is usually yellow in colour.
